In 2016, the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions issued an open letter to draw attention to the fact that the health and social services sector had the highest number of lost-time injuries of all industries, across the entire nation.
With over 41,000 accepted claims in 2014 and over 45,000 in 2017, the injury rate is only getting worse. Paradoxically, healthcare seems to foster some of the most hazardous jobs in Canada, having surpassed quarrying, mining, manufacturing, and even construction in terms of the total number of work-related injuries.
Physical violence is the leading cause of this worrying trend. In 2014, for instance, health care workers were 15 times more likely to be victims of violence than a law enforcement officer.
